Change - The Only Thing That is Consistent in Life - Neuro Tip
Jan 04, 2025The only thing we can know will always be consistent is that things will change. Change is interpreted in a brain as danger. Our brains despise change. We get to teach our brains that change is necessary and more importantly change is good when we are growing and moving towards the person we want to become.
As a parent/guardian we have the benefit of seeing life from a birds eye view. We have lived long enough to see a lot of change. Often teens are not as acquainted with the concept of change as adults. Often they don't realize how temporary their high school years are and that with a blink they will be gone.
One of the emotional struggles many teens have is situations, emotions, and things getting blown up out of proportion. If you have ever heard a teen say something like, "My life is over" or "This is the worst day ever" over a situation which didn't Merritt that big of a response, you have probably witness a teenager who is out of touch with the rate at which things will move on and change and be ok again. Fluctuating emotions can have a lot to do with this.
Helping a teen understand how change is common, frequent, and good is a step towards helping them handle hard situations. Also, helping a teenager understand just how special the present moment is because it can all change in an instant is a powerful lesson. So many people go through each day without truly living because they are stressed about this, or trying to make it to the next deadline, or concerned about a certain outcome from a certain thing. This is not living. This is surviving. Helping your teenager learn young to LIVE is a brain pathway they can take into adulthood that will increase the quality of their life and the impact they can have in powerful ways!
We cannot change a teenagers puberty journey. They must go through the hormonal changes and awkward transitions we all went through. We CAN however talk openly about things that will help them process and handle the changes and hormones they have not been used to before puberty.
