Leadership training with our Rise-N-Lead Internship
Nov 08, 2024Our Rise-N-Lead Internship is at the heart of our program and community. This is a year long program that meets once a month in the school year. In the summer students get to participate in hands on coaching opportunities in locations that fit their schedule. Students that have already participated in the Internships are encouraged to participate again and will have additional learning opportunities to build on the foundation already laid!
Benefits from the Internship:
Confidence - Interns grow in confidence of their own parkour skills as they begin teaching others and realize how far they have come. From the first class when most interns haven’t ever publicly spoke in a large group leading situation to after the summer when interns are much more comfortable leading and guiding others, so much confidence in self, ability, and purpose emerges. Interns also grow in confidence knowing they are a critical part of our community and that they have something meaningful to contribute.
Community - Our intern meetings are full of learning, fun, challenges and so much more. We often do team activities that allow for additional problem solving and working with others in a group setting. The internship also provides a unique opportunity for our broad community to come together once a month and make friends with parkour practitioners form other locations.
Public Speaking - Interns get to practice public speaking skills by leading others. Because they get repetitive practice coaching, they have the opportunity to learn from each experience and use it to become better at communicating clearly and with confidence.
Critical Thinking Skills - Our internship challenges individuals to think several steps ahead and to act by choice, not chance. We challenge our interns to think about how to best support, encourage, challenge, and help the students. This means thinking beyond “Good Job”. This means doing more than showing up and winging it. This means practicing communicating, practicing thinking through movements and safety elements to point out, practicing interacting in a helpful manner and so much more.
Job Training - Our internship acts as job preparation as students learn about being professional, keeping commitments, preparing, and receiving feedback. Some of our first interns have already gone to take their ADAPT Level 1 course in Austin and are now paid coaches leading thriving classes in our community.
