Freedom From Fear: 3 Pillars of Helping Your Teen Prepare for Success and Massive Impact in Life (Neuro Tip)
Nov 22, 2024The second pillar in helping your teen prepare for success and in giving them tools to be ready to make massive impact in life is Freedom From Fear.
There are two big ways a parent can help prime their teen to have freedom from fear. These two ways are: interact with fear openly and understand the difference between absence of fear and freedom from fear.
Interact With Fear Openly
- Letting your teens see you interact with fear and how you handle it plays a huge role in the brain pathways they will form that will automate how they handle fear in their own life.
- Building a relationship and environment for your teen that lets them know they are always welcome to bring up any fear they have in an open and non judgmental way is huge. Teens will talk to someone about their fears and struggles. If it's not possible at the moment for that open dialogue to be with you, work to develop that kind of relationship. This kind of relationship takes time and cultivating.
- Creating an environment in your home that views fear as a normal part of life instead of a stressful thing to be avoided helps fear be handled in a healthy manner that allows for freedom from fear to be created and chosen.
Understand the Difference Between Absence of Fear and Freedom From Fear
Because of how our brain works if we are learning or growing in any kind of way there will always be elements of fear floating in and out and around our minds. When we think Freedom from Fear is the same as Absence of Fear we set ourselves and our teens up for failure. If there is an expectation that the only way I can not be fearful is for there to be nothing fearful in life (social, academic, physical, or any area of life), then we live waiting for this mystical moment of everything just being perfect. We all know that is not how life works; however, somehow many people's brains can still hold this belief and feeling of "When _____ is over, I will relax and have peace or _______".
