The Investment Resulting in a Child Eager to be Coachable
Nov 09, 2024In life, sports, business, school and everything we do the quickest way to improve is to learn from the mistakes of others instead of making them yourself for years. This takes a humble and coachable heart. In our parkour classes at Parkour East Texas we openly talk about what a coachable attitude is and what that looks like. We have a weekly focus on a variety of elements of Coachability. Our community prioritizes receiving feedback in a humble manner that allows an individual to take the feedback and improve quickly instead of take the feedback and become defensive, discourage, and frustrated. Our Level Proficiencies include character qualities such as determination and humility. In order to level up a student must demonstrate level appropriate understanding of all the character qualities. This motivates students to pursue character development instead of pursuing being the best in class. A student could perform all the movements well, but if they do not demonstrate all the character qualities on the proficiency list they will not move up. We use this outward motivation to draw attention to often overlooked areas in competitions, school, and life. Too often the result is praised more than the process. The result of getting first is praised as an accomplishment instead of the result of showing up, putting in the work, demonstrating character, and doing your best. We seek to help students learn the process is more important than the outcome; however, when you are committed to character and continually seeking for ways to become better then you were yesterday the outcome will be great!
